An Outside-the-Box Wedding Welcome Box Idea

The May, 2015, wedding of Trevor and Rachel was nothing short of amazing! Read more about the wedding and all it’s darling DIY touches here and here!

It was two weeks before the San Antonio wedding of Rachel and Trevor, and I didn’t have a welcome box or basket idea for our out-of-town guests. Quite frankly, we were quite a bit over our budget at that point, and baskets and boxes can get pretty expensive! But I wanted to welcome our out-of-town guests in a creative way with items that would be useful during their stay.

I brainstormed as I ran errands one day, and suddenly I had my “outside-the-box” and thrify idea… I would transform H-E-B grocery six-pack wine cartons! That way, I would only spend money on the items within the box and the decorations, not on the box itself.Welcome Box

H-E-B is one of the most beloved of San Antonio-based companies. It’s the only grocery store in town (besides Target and Walmart) because no one else could compete with their awesomeness! A friend gathered the 30 boxes I needed, and I went to work thinking about how to transform a box that says “H-E-B” and “10% off” all over it! I found a darling, denim-inspired product line at Michaels that was 60% off. I grabbed denim flowers (similar here), ribbon, and boxes. I also found cute burlap flowers, assorted washi tape and natural tan crinkle shredded paper

For the front of the box, I printed my welcome (Howdy!) on heavy kraft paper stock.

I printed the welcome tag on that same paper. To make the box make sense, I mentioned they could find anything they needed during their stay at H-E-B .welcome box tag

Next I had to decide what to put in the welcome boxes. I settled on Texas-produced Shiner Beer (light & regular), two water bottles, something sweet (Hershey’s Hugs & Kisses) and something salty (pretzels). I used the little denim containers for the candy. And of course, the water bottles needed a custom label! I created a “Hydrate” label and customized it with Trevor and Rachel’s monogram in the center and “Tabler Morrison Wedding” below the Hydrate text. Download my free generic version of the label here!

I transported everything (except the goodies for inside the box) from California to Texas (thankfully, the ticket agent allowed my 52 pound suitcase through without an additional fee!). Next was the fun part… several of my dearest friends and their sweet daughters joined me at the hotel to assemble the welcome boxes (and complete a few other wedding-related crafts). It was not the two-hour job I anticipated — it took longer — but we all had a blast together!

They brought glue guns, paper cutters, rulers, tape and everything else we might need. I had brought some black card stock to write Sweet and Salty with chalk markers on the pretzel bags and candy boxes. We placed some of the tan shredded paper in the bottom of the candy boxes and placed about eight Hugs & Kisses in each box. The pretzels were placed in cellophane bags and tied with twine.

To assemble the welcome boxes, we first glued on the Howdy labels. Next we added the washi tape about an inch below the top of the welcome label and then glued the assorted flowers (no two boxes looked the same).

Then we tied a denim ribbon around the handle, upped the cuteness-factor by adding a strip of washi tape to the corner of the welcome tag, glued on the tag, and then (x 27) we were done decorating!

After all the boxes were decorated, we stuffed crumpled packing paper in the bottom of the boxes before adding the shredded paper so that the contents would be lifted and also to save on shredded paper cost.

All in all, these boxes were economical, and I thought they turned out pretty cute.

Best of all was the girlfriend time on the day we put them together!

  3. I have to say, I got one of those little boxes of goodies and I thought you had probably spent a lot of money and time to put them together. They were absolutely adorable and good to eat. I had no idea that it was an HEB wine carton. LOL….but the goodies were very handy in between events! You are so very creative Andrea!
