We’ve Gone Paleo!

paleo

Right before the painful WOD! Perhaps the least flattering pic of us I’ll ever post!

Today marks day one of the Paleo Transformational Challenge at our box, Desert CrossFit. And Tom is doing it with me! I never thought I’d see the day. But honestly, if I’m going to succeed in this, he really has to be on board. Otherwise, I will come home several times a week to things I would never buy on my own. Like Oreos, Coke, Triscuits, brie cheese… the list goes on and on. Today while he was at work, I managed to throw out all the stuff we can’t have for the next six weeks.

I’m certain I’ll find more, but this was a good start. So if we can’t eat grains, dairy, beans, anything artificial or containing sugar, what CAN we eat? Real food! Vegetables, fruit, meat (even bacon!), nuts and seeds. And I am confident we will be able to do it. Though it will be much harder for Tom than for me because he adores his bread, cheese, and chocolate.

Tom, along with Erica from Body Comp, about to head in for his scan.

Though the challenge officially started today, we had some prep work over the weekend. On Saturday, we spent hours at the box. We were weighed and measured. We had our body composition measured by Body Comp. Now this was very interesting, and the information provided post-scan is so detailed that it’s nothing short of amazing. It only takes five minutes (albeit, five LONG minutes since you must lie perfectly still). Neither Tom nor I were very pleased with our numbers when it came to weight, measurement, and body fat. The numbers really gave us motivation to take our Paleo Transformation Challenge very seriously!

The body composition scanner.

After the scan and listening to how the challenge works, we did the challenge buy-in WOD (workout of the day):

100 meter sprint, 15 thrusters, 20 kettle bell swings, 15 burpees, 10 front rack lunges. As many rounds as possible in nine minutes.

And that was after the warm up, which was an entire workout in and of itself! It was SOOOOO HARD!!!!! There are no words, really. But the cool thing is that this WOD serves as a benchmark, and we will do the exact same WOD at the end with the same amount of weight. I suspect that we’ll get a lot more rounds completed then!

On Sunday, I joined our paleo posse at Trader Joe’s for a shopping tour. It was so helpful! The manager even served us samples of some of the paleo-adherent products. I will share some the better products with you soon.

During the challenge, we are recording our eating and lifestyle habits daily in a spreadsheet. Points are awarded, and there will be a winner!

My hope is that you will be encouraged as you follow our journey into Paleo. I’ll be posting paleo recipes, as well as sharing with you more about what paleo is and why we are following this plan. I’m excited to find new, healthier ways to cook some of our favorites.  Today I’m sharing my Scallop, Basil and Tomato Zucchini Pasta recipe that I posted several months ago. It’s paleo, and it’s so good!

  1. Good for you, Andrea! You and T are going to kick butt at this I’m sure. I can’t wait to see all the recipes. Now if only I could get P on board with this… Hmmm! xo

    • Thanks for your encouraging wordds, Jenny! I’m still in shock that I got Tom to agree. But getting in better shape before the wedding in just 3 months certainly helped!

  2. We too are going to start doing Paleo…Again. My husband only wants to incorporate it a few days a week, I of course say go big or go home 😉

  3. I think it sounds perfectly dreadful. I finally have come to the conclusion that I like myself just as I am…..I see other women my age in chico’s who are a size 8 or ten and they are wrinkled or have had facelifts, and body sculpture. Most of them look ten years older than me. Most people think that I am still in my 50’s or early 60’s…so I am not going to fix what ain’t broke!!! Plus, the teacher in my soldering class was amazed that I went home after the class and made a whole necklace. She is in her 50’s and she said that she had no energy to do anything but sit in front of the tv…so I know my energy level is still very high.

Plus, i am not a bit upset that, should I die soon, they won’t be able to put in my epitaf…she died thin…..rather, I want, she died happy and full of love! When you talk to old people who are dying they sure as heck don’t say….I wish I had dieted more, or I wish I was thinner. So what you see is what you get….a happy Mimi who may be a little plump but who loves life and lives it out loud fort sure!

    • Written as only a mother can write. 🙂 You are loved just as you are, of course! Tom and I are on a course to stay fit. It’s not about being thin (although I’ll take that as a benefit). It’s about being healthy and living a long life with our kids, grandkids, and Lord willing, great grandkids. The paleo plan (which isn’t perfectly dreadful so far… but it’s only day 3) is so natural that it decreases inflammation (that leads to illness & disease) all over the body. It also intentionally feeds the body the fuel it needs while eliminating the toxic stuff. We expect that we are going to be feeling so much better, all the time, soon! When we are done with the 6 week challenge, we’ll decide what changes to keep and which ones we won’t. xoxo

  4. Wish I could find a Box around here that I liked and didn’t feel overly intimidated by 😉 … I’ve been trying to avoid grains on and off for several years due to heavy inflammation .. it DOES works but staying on track is just hard and I need to remind myself more often (like ALL the time) that my joints don’t like grains :). So, is your Box doing the Whole30 or just Paleo? I’m sure you’ve already discovered Michelle over at Nom Nom Paleo but if NOT, by all means go to her site, EXCELLENT recipes, never had one that wasn’t delicious!

  5. You guys look great in your photo!! I know we dont KNOW each other but I am so excited and proud for you! I really need to jump on the band wagon and get healthier. our pantry is full of way to much JUNK FOOD and because I am home most of the day I am the one who ends up munching. BOOO. I cant wait to hear more about this challenge. It sounds awesome!
