Lessons I Learned on My First Periscope

I finally did it! Yep, I did my first Periscope on Saturday and my second one on Sunday. And guess what? IT REALLY WASN’T THAT SCARY AFTER ALL!

Lessons I Learned on My First Scope

That’s right. I decided to just do it and get past the fear. That’s what I did, and I’m positive you can too!

Today I want to share some of my thoughts and the lessons I learned from doing my first (and second) scope.

ONE
I rehearsed my scope ONE TIME by video taping myself… and I recommend you do the same. I only did it once (I didn’t want to get neurotic about perfection), and it was really helpful. You don’t need to rehearse your whole scope, but just enough video to catch any glaring mistakes. I realized that the selfie stick I was using was visible throughout the video, so I figured out a way to adjust that before my live scope. I also discovered the flies in my back yard were really a nuisance and that I would need to just deal with them.

The reason I mention the rehearsal as a lesson is that I failed to do it before my second scope. I should have taken a quick video before going live because I would have discovered that my hand was visible again! I had to just let it go and know I’ll fix it next time.

LESSON: Always do a quick video to catch and fix anything you don’t like.

TWO
The big moment had arrived. I had enjoyed a glass of wine to calm the nerves. I was READY! Time to do the important things I’d been learning from others. I needed to create a good title with emojis and my hashtag. (Which, by the way, is #TablerScope.) I also copied and pasted the title in my notes in case my broadcast was interrupted and I needed to quickly type in my title again.

The only problem was, I wasn’t sure how to create the title! I thought it probably went where it said “What are you seeing now?” But I wasn’t sure! Had to run inside to google it and make sure. Yep! That was where it was supposed to go. Somehow I didn’t learn that little detail in the Periscope online course I took. Or, maybe I just missed it. But you won’t!

LESSON: Don’t forget to type your compelling title with emojis and your personal scoping hashtag. Remember to paste it into notes. Your title goes where Periscope says “What are you seeing now?”

THREE
Okay. The title was done. Now I was ready to hit the Broadcast Now button. But wait… the camera wasn’t facing me. I wasn’t sure how to flip it. Had to run inside again to google how to flip the camera. Easy solution. Just double tap the screen! (either I wasn’t paying attention well enough in my online course, or this was another important factor not mentioned!)

LESSON: Double tap the screen of your phone when you want to flip the view of the camera.

FOUR
The whole thing just wasn’t as scary as I had made it out to be. Really… I promise! In fact, I was actually excited to do my second scope and I wasn’t scared anymore. There was one more funny thing that happened, however. I got to the end of what I wanted to share and realized there was no obvious way to END my scope while the camera was still facing my direction. YIKES! I had seen that happen to someone else last week and made a note to learn how. But I forgot. Then, before my second scope, I researched the matter and still wasn’t sure. Thankfully, at the end of my second scope, a listener told me the secret!

LESSON: To end the scope while the camera is facing you, simply swipe down. Works like a charm!

So… have you been brave enough to jump on Periscope and do your own scope? You gotta do it!

And if you aren’t ready to do your own scopes, then get on and look at what others have to teach! In the span of about an hour this morning, I got notifications for scopes on organizing my home office, how to lead a bible study with confidence, how to clean your cabinets before refinishing, workout tips, and morning devotions. All those topics in addition to all the content on social media and Periscoping.

If you want to watch any of my scopes, just go here! (Except my second scope, which didn’t record). You can find me on Periscope by searching for @AndreaTabler. Hope to see you there soon!

xoxo,

  1. I just can’t do one more thing! Running out of time trying to blog, and keep up with Linky Parties, and my emails, and my grand baby, and ….

  2. I have not jumped on the Periscope bandwagon yet. My time is fully taken up with blogging, doing projects, link parties, social media – one more thing may break this camel’s back. Thanks for your great tips and sharing them at Share It One More Time. Cathy

    • Totally get it. ๐Ÿ™‚ But one thing that’s cool about Periscope is that you can repurpose your material to a new audience. I don’t find that it takes up my time but rather that it compliments what I’m already doing!

  3. I do want to learn more about what this Periscope thing really is. Awesome job jumping into learning this new form of social media and doing a great job. I know it can be a little intimidating!

  4. These are some good tips! So far I have only broadcast other events, nothing with me talking. Trying to work up the nerve! Thanks for sharing :o)

  5. I haven’t been on periscope yet, but have seen things about it here and there. I am not big into videoing myself, after reading this I am going to jump on and check it out, thanks for sharing your experience.

  6. Sounds like there is a bit of a learning curve. I’m sure these tips would make the process a bit less intimidating. Thanks for sharing with us at the #HomeMattersParty

  7. Sounds scary. Why is this preferable to a blog post? How is this preferable to a YouTube video?
Thank you for coming to the Inspire Me Monday Linky party last week.
I am Janice one of your hostesses.

    • Thanks for stopping by, Janice! I wouldn’t say it is preferable to a blog post or YouTube. It’s just another way to build community. Here’s how it is different and how in what way it could be an even better way to connect with your community. They are looking at you on their cell phone, just like if you were facetiming them. So it’s very intimate. AND, the coolest part (unlike a blog or youtube) is that they are interacting with you live. They tap the screen to give you hearts (encouragement, feedback) and they also ask you questions (they type) and you can answer. Those on the scope can interact with each other as well. Hope this helps. ๐Ÿ™‚

  8. I am going to try this. You make it look possible. Beautiful job.

  9. Your are too funny and very brave I am such a chicken. Thanks for linking up to Merry Monday! Sharing on my Blog Tips Board! Have a great week!
    Kim

  10. So excited that your periscope was a success! I’ll tell you a secret, I don’t “scope” but you motivated me to try! Thanks for sharing #HomeMattersParty hope to see you back!
