Why You (and Everyone Else) Should Be on Periscope!

Part One in the series Discovering Periscope.
Are you on Periscope yet? If yes, let’s become scope friends! Find me @AndreaTabler.

Periscope is the new black. Seriously, folks! It has taken the social media world by storm, and it’s growing by leaps and bounds on a daily basis. Today I’m starting a series, Discovering Periscope to help you understand what all the hoopla is all about!WHY YOU SHOULD BE ON PERISCOPE NOW!

I know, you are probably wondering what exactly Periscope is and why it should matter to you. This week on the blog, I’m going to be sharing the answers to those questions!

First, what is Periscope? It is simply a mobile app that allows you to interact with others in real time in a way that feels much like Facetime. It is live streaming video that allows you to learn just about anything. Plus you can interact (via typing in questions or comments live) with the person “scoping,” or streaming the video.

Think YouTube in terms of the video medium, Facebook in terms of commenting, and Instagram in terms of double tapping to give hearts as well as the fact that it is mobile only.

EVERYONE can learn in a valuable new way from Periscope. You can find scopes on cooking, fitness, sports, travel, bible study, personal development, beauty tips, music… really, anything! And anywhere. I’ve watched scopes from people live all over the world. Honestly, it’s more entertaining than T.V.

So that’s how any person can benefit from this cool new app. But if you are a blogger, content creator of any sort, business owner, techie, musician or artist, you are missing out every single day that you aren’t on Periscope. I’ll get into the reasons why another day this week.

How do you get started?
It’s really simple and straightforward, but there are a few pre-requisites you’ll need to know before you get started.

First, Periscope is an app, so you must have an iPhone (or iPad) or Android to do your own scope. (There are ways to watch scopes from a computer, which I’ll discuss another day).

Periscope is owned by Twitter, and it’s best to sign up through Twitter. So set up an account there first. (Be sure to use your real name if at all possible).

To get the app, simply head to the app store on your mobile device and search for the FREE Periscope app. Then start following people who are interesting to you!

Broadcasts are on the app for only 24 hours… after that they disappear. Scopers can save their broadcasts to katch.me, where they are archived indefinitely. (You can check out my past scopes at katch.me/AndreaTabler).

Why You (and Everybody Else) Should Be on PeriscopeSo hop on! Check it out! It’s just too cool to miss. And be sure to check back this week to learn more, especially if you have a brand or business! Oh, and don’t forget to follow me on Periscope @AndreaTabler.

xoxo,

  1. So Periscope requires both a phone signal and an internet connection (for those of us who have a limited amount of data on our plans!)? I have to have a land line at home because I have no cell service at home, but I can certainly look into getting it for when I’m traveling (which I love to do)! This is so cool, I’ve learned about something in social media before its second birthday!! I’m looking forward to reading what you have to say about it this week!

This sounds like a wonderful app. I have never heard of periscope until now. I will be looking into this. Social media is a great way to stay connected to family and friends. It is fun all the new ways to stay connected.

This sounds simple enough. It sounds like a great app to have no matter who you are. Thank you so much for sharing this. I will be checking this out
