Switch Tasking Gone Bad

Something very embarrassing happened to me today, and it was completely due to distraction.

You see, this was a very busy day right from the beginning. It started with taking my sweet, 10-year-old Cairn Terrier, Pumbaa, to the vet to have a large benign tumor removed (sniff, sniff). In the hours that followed, I was busy running important errands, working out and, then, catching up on work in my office. I noticed early on that I was extremely distracted, but I never slowed down. Fast forward to the embarrassing part.

About mid-afternoon, I went back to the vet to pick up Pumbaa. While I was waiting for them to bring him out, THIS is what I looked down and saw. Seriously.

feetTwo. Different. Left. Sandals. One was mine, and one was my son Trevor’s. Apparently both pairs were under my desk when I hurriedly left my home office.

This got me to thinking about how I ended up in public in this predicament. And of course, I made a joke about it to the other two people sitting near me in the vet lobby.

I thought back to a talk I’d heard by Curt Steinhorst last Saturday at The Hundred blogging conference in Dallas. He introduced us to the concept of switch tasking (as opposed to multi-tasking.) Switching tasking occurs when we are interrupted or quickly stop doing one thing to do another.  Like when you are working on a project, you hear your email chime, you stop your progress to check the new email, then perhaps click on a link, and 15 minutes later wonder what you were working on in the first place. As it turns out, multi-taskers are very bad switch-taskers.

And so, that is what happened to me. Switch tasking gone bad. I decided to see if the Bible has anything to say about distraction and focus. I found the following verse and thought about it for a while.

ProverbschalkartGod wants my eyes not only to look forward, but to gaze at Him. When I’m so distracted I wear mis-matched shoes, I clearly don’t even have my eyes focused on the moment, much less focused on God! But that’s what He calls me to do. Otherwise, I miss the potential blessings and opportunities He has set before me for the day.

Thankfully, His mercies are new EVERY morning. I shall try again tomorrow! Perhaps I’ll take a cue from the recuperating Pumbaa. Just hang out and rest. Rest in God’s word, that is.
