Spell It Out for Me: Word Block diy

Word Block DIY... so easy and I love the finished product!

I’m so excited to be visiting Tabler Party of Two! My name is Angela. Andrea and I have been friends for years and have collaborated on many fun projects and events. We make a pretty great team! Come visit me over at It’s Not a Boring Life for recipes, crafts, motherhood and ministry!

I’ve wanted to make some word blocks for a while now. I’m a word kind of gal, and I have word signs all over my house. I’m pretty happy with how these turned out. Let’s get started!

You need brainstorming time, shopping time (an hour or less), project time (about an hour), and about $30 if you choose the same items I used. Make sure to use a coupon if you can find one.

Decide what you want your blocks to say. I chose “Fear Not” as a reminder to myself that God is in control. Sometimes I start to think that I am in control, and that can cause anxiety, to say the least. Isaiah 41:10 always brings me peace: “So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” Choose something meaningful to you!

Head to your local big box craft store for supplies. You will need wooden blocks, adhesive, decorative papers, tags or cardstock, and letters or a way to make your letters. I used my Cricut Mini to cut letters, but if you don’t have one of those, you can buy vinyl letters, letter stickers, letter stamps, or chipboard letters. Also, get a few decorative items. Have fun with this! I chose “gems” and metallic leather cord. Much to my tween son’s dismay, I spent about an hour picking out exactly what I wanted.

You can knock the assembly portion of this project out in about an hour, depending on how many interruptions you expect. Do yourself a favor and cover your work surface with something to contain all the bits of paper and such that will make a mess. I used a kitchen apron and that was perfect.

Start by laying out your blocks and the papers you want as the first layer of your block, in order. Yes, you can use the same paper for each block if you wish. This is your project – you do you!

Trace and cut each paper. Attach the paper to the block using your choice of adhesive. I used a glue runner, but you could also use a decoupage medium if you prefer. If you have any excess paper, use a craft blade to trim the edge to fit. You want to have nice tight edges.

Adhere your tag or a suitable piece of card stock as the next layer. My decorative “gems” had brads, so I poked those through the hole in my tag before attaching the tag to the block. I staggered the placements of mine and alternated brown and white tags. I liked them both, so I used both. One color is fine!

Attach your letters. I cut mine out on white card stock, then used a textured stamp and brown and green stamp pads to color the letters before attaching. I used two layers of letters, alternating colors. If you want to do the same, that means you’ll be painting each letter in both colors. Then you will layer them to create the illusion of a drop shadow.

Decorate your blocks with any additional items you picked up. Since I had already used a “gem” on each one earlier in the process, I just wanted to add that leather cord in a couple of places. It tied on easily and didn’t require any adhesive. It adds a nice touch.

That’s it, Folks. Easy-peasy, fun and pretty. Now get out there and create your own!

I really like this, it is beautiful. I will try this at the holidays. I love homemade decor over something purchased. You have done a very nice job.
